Questions about IELTS band scores
How is the overall IELTS band calculated?
Add the four paper bands, divide by four, and round to the nearest half band: an average ending in .25 rounds up to the next half band and one ending in .75 rounds up to the next whole band. So 6.5, 6.5, 6.0 and 7.0 give 6.5; 6.5, 6.5, 7.0 and 7.0 give 6.75, which becomes 7.0.
How many correct answers do I need for band 7 in Listening?
About 30 out of 40. Band 8 needs about 35, band 6 about 23. The exact line moves by a mark between test versions.
How many correct answers for band 7 in Academic Reading?
About 30 out of 40, and about 35 for band 8. General Training Reading needs more correct answers for the same band because its texts are easier; this calculator uses the Academic conversion.
Can I get band 7 overall with a 6 in Writing?
Yes, if the other three carry it: 7.5, 7.5, 6.0 and 7.0 average 7.0. Many candidates do exactly this, but universities and visa routes often set a minimum per paper as well as overall, so check the requirement for each.
Is this calculator the same as the official one?
The rounding rule is the official one. The Listening and Reading conversions are the published approximate tables, which move by a mark or two between test versions; they are the tables our practice tests mark with.
