Spoken versus written

Before you start speaking Tamil
Indian or Sri Lankan Tamil?
Chennai spoken Tamil by default. Ask for Sri Lankan Tamil and your partner adjusts vocabulary and forms; the two are understood by each other.
I understand Tamil but answer in English. Will this help?
It is exactly the case this helps most: you have the vocabulary and need to produce it under no pressure, many times, with the respect endings corrected gently.
Do I need to read the Tamil script first?
No. Every word on screen comes with a Latin transliteration, and the practice is spoken. Learn the script alongside if you want to; it is phonetic and takes a week or two.
