Take Mrs. Khan’s call yourself

An angry customer, live and out loud. She pushes back if you sound scripted. You get a report on your opening, empathy, fix and close.

The short answer

Expect four things: common questions (tell me about yourself, why this job, an angry customer, night shifts), a spoken English test such as Versant or SVAR, a mock call where the interviewer plays a customer, and a final interview. Keep answers short and specific, and practise the mock call out loud.

What are the rounds in a call center interview?

RoundWhat they check
HR interviewClear English, attitude, shifts, start date.
English testVersant, SVAR or the company’s own: pronunciation, fluency, listening.
Mock callThe interviewer plays a customer. How you open, calm, solve and close.
Final interviewA team leader asks “what would you do if…” questions for their account.

The order changes by company. Some do it all in one day.

What questions are asked in a call center interview?

Say something like these, in your own words. Short and specific beats long and general.

Tell me about yourself.

I finished my business degree in June. I worked weekends at a pharmacy counter for two years, so I’m used to worried customers. I stay calm and explain things simply, and I’d like to do that full time on the phone.

Now, one proof, why this job. Under a minute.

Why do you want to work in a call center?

I like solving one clear problem at a time and I’m good on the phone. I know the job has targets and shifts, and I’m fine with that.

Showing you know the hard parts makes it believable.

How would you handle an angry customer?

Let them finish, apologise once for the specific problem, check the account, then say what I’ll do and by when. If I can’t fix it on the call, I give the next step and a reference.

If there’s a mock call later, do exactly this.

What does good customer service mean to you?

The problem is solved, or the customer knows exactly what happens next, and they didn’t have to explain it twice.

Can you work night shifts and weekends?

Yes. I’ve checked transport from my area for night shifts, and my family knows the schedule.

Only say yes if it’s true.

What if you don’t know the answer to a customer’s question?

I wouldn’t guess. I’d check the knowledge base or ask my team leader, and if it takes long, arrange a callback with a time.

Why should we hire you?

You need people who stay calm on hard calls and learn systems fast. I’ve done both at the pharmacy, and I’m available for the full shift pattern.

Do you have any questions for us?

How long is training before live calls? What does a good first month look like on this account?

What is the voice and accent test?

A short computer-scored speaking test. The two you’ll meet most:

TestLengthWhat you do
Versant (Pearson)17 minRead aloud, repeat sentences, short answers, build sentences, retell stories.
SVAR (SHL)12–15 minListen, then repeat or answer in your own words. AI-scored.
  • Clarity beats accent. Don’t fake an American or British accent.
  • No long silences. A quick partial answer scores better than a pause.
  • Quiet room, good headset. Test your microphone first.

What happens in the mock call round?

The interviewer plays an unhappy customer. They listen for five steps:

StepSay something like
1. Open“Thank you for calling NetLink, this is Rhea. How can I help?”
2. Acknowledge once“I’m sorry you’ve been without internet since yesterday.”
3. Verify“Could I take your account number?”
4. Fix, with a time“I can book a technician for tomorrow, 9 to 12. I’ll do it now.”
5. Summarise and close“To confirm: tomorrow, 9 to 12, reference 847216.”

Expect one push-back, like “the last agent said the same thing”. Answer what they actually asked.

What does a good mock call sound like?

We ran our call center role play twice on 7 November 2026: the same angry customer, the same facts, a fresher played by an AI. Once unprepared, once after learning the five steps.

Unprepared

62 / 100

Said “I understand” and “sorry for the inconvenience” in all 10 turns. Never gave her name or asked for the account.

Prepared

90 / 100

Opened properly, gave a time, logged a credit, summarised. The customer said “Thanks for actually sorting it”.

MomentUnpreparedPrepared
Opening“Hi, sorry for the inconvenience.”“Thank you for calling NetLink, this is Rhea.”
The fix“Our team will look into it… as soon as possible.”“The soonest technician slot is tomorrow between 9 and 12.”
“What’s different this time?”“Our team will follow up as soon as possible.”“I can book the earliest visit right now, plus raise the credit request.”

Same facts. The prepared call was shorter and owned the next step.

Which phrases should you drop on a mock call?

Instead ofSay
“Sorry for the inconvenience” (every turn)One specific apology: “I’m sorry you had to call twice.”
“As soon as possible”A time: “tomorrow between 9 and 12”.
“Our team will get back to you”“I’m booking it now, while we’re on the call.”
“Please hold”“Can I put you on hold for a minute while I check?”
“I can’t do that”“What I can do is…”

Can you pass with no experience?

Yes. Many entry-level voice jobs train new hires. Take your examples from:

  • A shop, pharmacy, restaurant or family business.
  • University projects, clubs, tutoring or volunteering.
  • Anything on the phone: bookings, suppliers, surveys.

Nervous about speaking? Read afraid to speak English. For general interviews, try the job interview role play.

Common worries

Is my accent a problem?

Usually not. Tests and interviewers judge how clear you are, not whether you sound foreign.

Is there a PDF of these questions?

Print this page and choose “Save as PDF”. Avoid PDFs on unknown sites; many are copies or spam.

What if I fail Versant or SVAR?

Retake rules differ by company. Ask the recruiter, and practise repeats and retelling meanwhile.

Can I practise the mock call alone?

Yes. Our call center role play gives you a live AI customer, and AI phone call practice helps if English calls are new to you.

How this was made: Mike read the ranking pages, candidate reports and Pearson’s and SHL’s own test descriptions. The mock calls are practice runs of our scene with an AI candidate, scored by the scene’s own report. AI helped draft; Mike checked the facts.
