How each embassy interviews applicants from Pakistan

United States: Islamabad and Karachi

Nonimmigrant interviews for Pakistani applicants take place at the U.S. Embassy in Islamabad and the Consulate General in Karachi, in English, at a window, in a few minutes. The officer has your DS-160 on screen and rarely looks at documents. Student (F-1), visitor (B1/B2) and work (H-1B) applicants are asked, above all, why they will come back: the job, the family, the business that waits for them. Most refusals are under 214(b), which means exactly that.

United Kingdom: the credibility interview

UK applications from Pakistan go through the visa application centre; most are decided on paper, and Student visa applicants may be called to a credibility interview, usually by video, where an entry clearance officer asks about the course, the modules, the fees and why the UK. The interview is structured and the officer wants specifics: candidates who cannot name their modules fail it.

Schengen: appointments at the embassy

Germany, Italy, France, Spain and the other Schengen posts in Islamabad (and consulates in Karachi for some) interview in person for national visas such as study and work; short-stay applications are mostly decided on the file, with a short interview possible. Germany will not proceed on a student visa until the blocked account exists; Italy and Spain want the admission and the accommodation in order. Interviews are procedural and document-led: the officer checks that every paper matches what you say.

Canada, Australia, Türkiye, China

Canada seldom interviews study-permit applicants; the decision is on the study plan, the funds and the GCMS notes. Australia decides most student visas on the file and may phone the applicant or the institution. Türkiye and China interview at their embassies in Islamabad for student and work visas, briefly and politely, with the documents in front of them. The guides for each say what the officer is deciding.

Asked of almost every Pakistani applicant

The six questions that decide most interviews

  • Why this country and not Pakistan for the course or the job?
  • Who is paying, what do they earn, and does it add up?
  • What will you do after you finish, and where?
  • Do you have relatives there, and what is their status?
  • Have you been refused before, by anyone?
  • What ties bring you back: job, family, property, business?

Practice in English, review in Urdu

The mock interview is in English, as the window is. Choose Urdu as the language you already speak and the review afterwards explains, in Urdu, what each answer told the officer and what the better answer was. The officer persona is built for the post you choose: the Islamabad window for the US, a video credibility interview for the UK, a document check for Germany.

It improves your chances. It never guarantees a visa, and anyone who says otherwise is selling something.

Questions from applicants in Pakistan

Is the US visa interview in Islamabad in English or Urdu?

In English. Officers at the Islamabad embassy and the Karachi consulate conduct interviews in English; an interpreter can be arranged for applicants who do not speak it, but a student or work applicant is expected to answer in English, and how you speak is part of what the officer judges.

Can I practise the visa interview with explanations in Urdu?

Yes. The interview itself is in English, as the real one is, and the review afterwards marks every answer; set your own language to Urdu and the explanations of what went wrong and the better answer come in Urdu.

What are the most common reasons Pakistani applicants are refused?

Not showing enough reason to return (214(b) in the US, "intention to leave could not be ascertained" at Schengen posts), funds that do not match the story, a course or job that does not fit the applicant’s history, and answers that were memorised and fell apart when the officer pushed. None of these is about documents; all of them are about the interview.

How long does the US visa interview take in Pakistan?

Two to five minutes at the window after a wait that can be hours. The decision is usually made within the first two or three answers.

Does TalkNative guarantee a visa?

No. Nothing and nobody can. Practising the real interview with an officer who holds your file, follows up and can refuse you improves your chances by removing the vagueness and the memorised answers that cause most refusals.
