What the officer is deciding
Whether the applicant has overcome the INA 214(b) presumption that every applicant is an intending immigrant — i.e. that they are a genuine student with the funds to complete the course and a residence abroad they have no intention of abandoning.
Every question in a US F-1 interview serves this one decision. An answer that does not help the officer decide it is wasted time, and in a 5-minute interview there is none to waste.
What they will probe
The questions behind the questions
In priority order. The exact wording changes; what the consular officer is trying to establish does not.
- Why this university and not one closer to home, or a cheaper one
- How the course connects to a specific job they can name back home
- Who is paying, what that person earns, and whether the numbers add up
- Whether they intend to work in the US after graduating
Answers that sink an application
Red flags
Each of these has refused real applicants. The simulator’s officer listens for every one.
- Cannot name the university, the city, or the degree precisely
- Course has no relationship to their prior study or stated career
- Sponsor income cannot plausibly cover tuition plus living costs
- Says they will "see what happens" or "try to find a job there" after study
- Close relatives already living in the US, especially out of status
- Answers sound memorised and collapse the moment they are pushed off script
Have these at your fingertips
What a credible applicant knows cold
- Exact university name, city and state, and why that programme specifically
- Total tuition and living cost per year, and the funding source for all of it
- The sponsor's occupation, income and relationship to them
- A concrete job title and employer type they will return to
How a refusal is worded
The grounds the consular officer can refuse under
Publicly documented references, included so the practice interview can end the way a real one does. They are not legal advice.
- INA 214(b)
Failed to establish nonimmigrant intent
The default refusal. Used whenever the applicant has not convinced the officer they will return home — weak ties, vague plans, or a story that does not hold together.
- INA 221(g)
Administrative processing / documents outstanding
The case is not refused outright but held: a document is missing, or the profile needs further security or employment checks.
- INA 212(a)(6)(C)(i)
Misrepresentation
The applicant states something material the officer believes to be knowingly false.
