What the officer is deciding
The Genuine Student criterion (clause 500.212), which replaced the GTE test in 2024: whether the applicant genuinely intends to stay temporarily to study, judged on their circumstances at home, the value of the course to their future, and their immigration history.
Every question in a Australia Subclass 500 interview serves this one decision. An answer that does not help the officer decide it is wasted time, and in a 14-minute interview there is none to waste.
What they will probe
The questions behind the questions
In priority order. The exact wording changes; what the case officer is trying to establish does not.
- Why this course and provider, and how it builds on what they have already done
- The financial capacity evidence and whose money it is
- Circumstances at home: job, family, assets
- What they expect to earn back home with this qualification versus now
Answers that sink an application
Red flags
Each of these has refused real applicants. The simulator’s officer listens for every one.
- Course unrelated to their background with no explanation
- A pattern of course-hopping or provider changes
- Salary uplift argument does not work — the course costs more than it could ever return
- Answers focus on post-study work rights rather than the study itself
Have these at your fingertips
What a credible applicant knows cold
- Provider, CRICOS code, course and duration
- Tuition, OSHC and living cost figures
- Funding source with evidence
- The specific role and salary they are targeting at home
